What is Encryption?
Encryption is a method of encoding information in a way that only an authorized party can use and access it. It involves converting plain text into ciphertext by using an encryption algorithm and a cryptographic key. The primary purpose of encryption is to make sure that confidentiality of data by making unintelligible to anyone who does not have the correct decryption key.
There are two main types of encryption:
Symmetric Encryption: In this process, the same key is used for both encryption and decryption. It's very efficient but requires secure key distribution.
Asymmetric Encryption: Also known as public-key cryptography, this method uses a pair of keys (public and private keys) for encryption and decryption. The public key is widely distributed, while the private key remains secret.
What are Encrypted WhatsApp Messages?
Encrypted whatsApp messages refer to the messages sent and received through the whatsapp messaging platform that are protected using end to end encryption. let's see how its works -
1. End to End Encryption - WhatsApp uses E2EE, which makes us assure that only the sender and the given recipient(s) can read the messages. This only means that WhatsApp servers, as well as any third parties, cannot decrypt the messages even if they intercept them.
2. Encryption Keys - Each message is encrypted using encryption keys that are unique to the sender and given recipient(s) of the message. These keys are generated and managed automatically by WhatsApp.
3. Security: E2EE makes us assure that messages are encrypted on the sender's device and it can only be decrypted on the recipient's device. This prevents anyone—including WhatsApp itself—from accessing the plaintext content of the messages as they transit the network.
4.Authentication: To ensure the security of the messages, WhatsApp uses cryptographic ideas to authenticate users and devices, ensuring that messages are not manipulated by unauthorized parties third parties.
WhatsApp's Implementation: WhatsApp’s encryption is based on the Signal Protocol, which is highly regarded for its security and privacy features. It encrypts not only text messages but also voice calls, video calls, and file transfers made through WhatsApp.
